Victoria Northside Rotary Club - Chartered on May 2, 1968
HISTORY OF VICTORIA NORTHSIDE ROTARY CLUB
District Governor Allen Lawrence appointed Past Governor George Gilliam of Corpus Christi as Director of Club Expansion for the year 1967-68. Governor Gilliam appointed Past District Governor J. D. Moore, Graves Rouse, and Harold Leon to explore the possibility of forming a new Rotary Club in Victoria. The survey showed there were enough classifications for a new club, and on March 12, 1968, the Victoria Rotary Club voted to release the territorial rights.
The first organizational meeting for what was to become the North Side Rotary Club of Victoria, Texas, was held on April 4, 1968. Rotary International set the minimum number of members for the new club at twenty (20) members with a maximum of thirty-five (35), based on the population of the released territory. All data for a charter was mailed to Governor Allen Lawrence on April 12, 1968. On April 18, 1968, rotary International granted provisional status to the North Side Rotary Club of Victoria, Texas. At the first provisional meeting, William S. Fly, Senior Active, presented a program on Rotary information to all twenty-four (24) new members and ten (10) members from the Victoria Club who has transferred membership.
Officers and Directors elected for the interim period and full term for 1968-69 were: president, Louis A. Woehl; Vice-President, Richard L. Goodwin; Secretary, James M. Wyatt; Treasurer, Arren A. Akins; Directors, Burke Kirkpatrick, Dr. T. S. McMurry, Walt Nicol, Johnny Pavlica, and Clarence Stevenson.
May 16, 1968, at the Rotary international Convention held in Mexico City, Resolution 68-48 passed providing that active membership be based on member’s residence or place of business.
The Board of Directors of Rotary International granted the Charter on May 2, 1968, and on June 13, 1968, a Charter Night presentation was held at the Victoria Country Club with Ken Nathan, President of the Victoria Club, presiding. District Governor Allen Lawrence presented the charter to Louis Woehl. The principal speaker was Ed Bracher of Houston, Texas, Vice-President of Rotary International.
To provide a permanent home for this Charter, it was placed in the District 24 Court Room by members of North Side Club through the courtesy of District Judge Joe Kelly and the Commissioners’ Court of Victoria County, composed of Judge Wayne Hartman, El L. Crisp, Frank Barnett, pat Moore, and Alvin Helweg.
